Before purchasing this item I read many of the reviews saying how problematic this gun is. I also looked at reviews on the internet which suggested that as long as you use the correct, fine, sand then the gun works fine. For DIYers like me, the recommendation was to use pre-mixed mortar with adequate admixture. So I took the plunge, made the purchase and used premixed mortar, all without problems.
I raked out the mortar joints of a memorial brick paving area and realised that my pointing skills are not good enough for narrow joints.
I bought this Roughneck gun, seeing that it had a narrow mortar nozzle (black).
Unfortunately, it cannot extrude rgular plasticised mortar through such a narrow nozzle.
I have returned it but will purchase again if I have a large amount of wide mortar joints to fill.
Nothing wrong with this gun if used correctly. 64 sm of hydraulic lime pointing carried out with ease .notice a lot of negative reviews saying it clogs or goes stiff . A simple clean out of water every few fills and I light oil on the plunge shaft this gun works as it should. Note your consistency of product.a good wash and oil at the end of the day and it will last many jobs to come
Too early to say how long it will last, but it's done the job I wanted it for (regrouting parts of a wall). I do find it a bit tight to use towards the end of the fill, and after several days of use the ratchet isn't as good as it was. 4 stars due to those minor issues.
Excellent gun, used it for damp proof course sausages so far and absolutely brilliant. Will try it for mortar in the future.
Good after some experimentation with mix and getting into a rhythm
What a faff . From Laing it up and plungers coming off etc. why doesn’t the instructions have decent pics not just what’s there? Very poor
Surprisingly well made, easy to use and clean out. The best gun I have used. For mortars I would make sure you have a fine enough mixture and add a retardant.
Really good sausage mastic gun. Not used for anything else it's designed for. But seems to be a better use than most.
Good kit - well designed and robust. Difficult to do a good job without it.
Lovely bit of kit, keep the instructions, as it has multiple uses
Fast and efficient service and a good price for the pointing gun which was also in stock
Good product, wanted one for s while, bit difficult to load with mortar could do with a filler, blocks up easily need to make mortar wetter than usual to allow through the nozzle
Was only effective for half the syringe when using mortar. The front half came out reasonably ok, if a little runny. The back half went dry as the compression pushed all the liquid out. This half had to be removed manually.
This product feels like it needs a perfect mix to function properly, of which no information is provided. If you get a decent buttery mortar mix going then what happens is that the first half of the tube comes out extra fluffy, while the bottom half is compressed into a solid sand bar. Basically it compresses the mix too much and separates the liquid from the solids In the end I abandoned its use because loading it up each time and only using half the tube was not efficient. If I could somehow get the perfect mix for it it would be very good, but alas.
I mixed up Mapei tile grout exactly as per instructions, but it was still too thick for the gun to pump out. The gun juddered and this resulted in the the grout spaffing out splattering the work area instead of oozing out in a smooth controlled fashion. I was hoping this gun would be the solution to quicker grouting, but it was a big fat messy FAIL.
Good with filler but not so good with mortar. Well made
Very good and easy to use and clean, good value and I’d recommend
Great tool works well well and good quality ,good to gets spares too
robust build quality.
fills easy with correct mix.
easy and quick to use.
make sure it's fully empty before refilling to prevent a plug forming.
using the correct end makes for a clean finish.
makes light work of a boring task.
