Average bit of kit for the money and ok with wider chisels but not so good with smaller chisel widths as it doesn’t hold them squarely
This performed well with a Block Plane blade, holding it securely in the dedicated groove, but unfortunatly this is not the case with chisels. Being an unmachined casting the clamping faces are simply not square and parallel, therefore they allow the chisels to move, making it very difficult to attain a square edge.
I nearly didn't buy this tool because of the negative reviews but thought as per one reviewee that its not expensive and not a big loss if its no good. I am certainly glad I DID buy it, it is great - I now have 5 perfectly sharp chisels, 3 of them being chipped quite badly and blunt.
The best bit - I am a tradesman but got my trainee to sharpen the chisels, so its not like you have to be super skilled to use it. Granted, its a bit fiddly to get the chisels level in the small grooves, but it really wasnt that difficult, and also straight forward getting the right angle.
It took about 45mins for my lad to get all 5 chisels to a nice usable condition, and the fact it is relatively easy to do means that I can give them a quick sharpen after every use to keep them tip top.
I honestly cannot believe the results considering some of the negative reviews. In the nicest possible way, if you cant get this to work, maybe you shouldnt try using chisels.
Quite good, would be better with two wheels but does the job
Basically it does get the right angle on the edge of a blade but it doesn’t stay square. I tried to put a new edge on a plane iron and couldn’t work out why it wasn’t going square. The honing guide twists under holding pressure so won’t ever put a good edge on anything.
Budget, maybe. Cheap, certainly.
But extraordinary value for money.
Chisel and planer blades sit firm and square. If you are in a hurry to reshape a tool try it on a bench horizontal slow speed belt sander. Works for me and if you break it just buy another.
The only thing is you’ll need to make an angle template for the tool protrusion from the guide to the edge to set your honing angle. There are plenty of “how tos” on the web.
You can spend £100 for a guide and £200 for a wet grinder and do no better than this that costs just over fiver. What’s to lose.
Nice and simple and gets the job done, no complaints.
Good quality, and good value, excellent product, thanks
Had to return as it didnt sharpen my chisels square
Tough enough tool could have done with a guide to the setting dimension for each chisel.
Not brilliant. A bit fiddly and doesn't hold "all" chisel shapes.
Struggled for years with blunt chisels, but no longer. Really simple to use; I started off using 80 grit glass paper, working up to an eventual 1200 grit, and now I have chisels I could shave with! Well made tool, which works best with the clamp nipped up with a screwdriver.
Spot on Replaed my Old 1 used for my wood Plane & Chisels
Not set up yet but if it works as the videos I've seen it will make sharpening my chisels a doddle
Bit flimsy but does the job but adequate for basic sharpening jobs
Simple and easy to use. Found it secure enough by tightening with a screwdriver once the blade is positioned.
Used this to aid the sharpening of my Minotaur wood plane blade. Good guide, fairly easy to set and holds the blade well. Nice smooth action over the stone. Good value for money.
The thread could do with being of a better quality as I ended up having to use a screwdriver to adjust the width, other than that it did the job.
It has a good grip when hand tightened. Fairly sqare but angle measurements could be more prominent. If you didn't know where to look 0, you wouldnt find them.
Good bit of kit to have, anyone can sharpen a chisel but I wanted to restore an old one that had been used to remove tiles by someone, this guide took the rounded edges out of the equation, not the most stable guide but definitely got me to a workable tip with ease.
