I bought this because my wife found our mains operated hedge trimmer too big & unwieldy now that we are in our late 70’s & she wants to trim things her way! This trimmer allows her to do this, it’s not too heavy and my spare 3AH 18v Makita battery has enough capacity for what she wants to do.
The unit comes with the grass shears installed, changing the cutting head to the hedge trimmer is a bit fiddly because the cam plate has to be turned over & refitted to the drive pegs, our one didn’t want to seat fully down so it needed a firm tap to persuade it, then getting the hedge trimmer blades to locate correctly on the cam plate took a few attempts but the result is superb, it cuts cleanly and quickly so it’s a great addition to our gardening tool kit & the hedges & bushes look great.
Grass shears wouldn’t cut grass at all . Hedge trimmers worked perfect but no point keeping it for just the hedge trimmer @ £74
Easy to use,quick blade change
This little tool is wonderful when in hedge mode to reach awkward corners
Excellent product. Perfect for small shrubs
It has both grass cutter and the hedge trimmer extension, which was a nice surprise as it is not that obvious in the ads that seems to show just the grass cutter.
Feels well balanced and like all Makita tools it's quality product, I would highly recommend, seems quite good on battery life.
It is a bit confusing to swap cutting blades over, and had to find an online video the included written instructions, written instructions were not obvious ( kind of useless ). So check online there is a good video explaining swapping over that is easy to follow.
Maybe Makita will improve the change over - it's a bit fiddly and time consuming, much more effort than changing a drill bit.
With bushes you will need something more more beefy for bigger branches. For cutting grass round steps it's excellent and good for shaping bushes. Ideally for a gardener as a complementary tool that lends it's self to multiple tasks. If you have large areas of tall grass to clear it's likely take too long, and if you have large hedges, a bigger cutter would complement. So ideal if your on a budget and want quality but for serious users likely you will want other tools as well.
It's handy managable size, making it ideal for many strengths of people, and seems very robust.
If you are already a Makita user it's a great addition at a feasible price, but if you don't have a battery/charge already - it's probably a bit expensive unless you plan to get more Makita tools.
There are some additional stuff to store the hedge blades and extra protector on the hedge blade... these are hassle to store with my drills, likely will not keep them, unless it comes in a box, I think storage is likely the only downside. Good buy, highly recommend, but only used it few times so still early days.
Delivery worked well, toolstation seem good supplier.
Had a cheaper make previously with a narrower grass cut and less power. The Makita is a vast improvement. Well balanced and does not clog in long grass. Have yet to change over to the hedge trimmer attachment. The plastic cut height adjuster is helpful. Although quite expensive, the Makita quality is evident.
