If you're a self-employed tradesperson in the UK, the biggest tax shake-up in 30 years is happening in exactly FOUR WEEKS, and HMRC isn't messing about.
From **6th April 2026**, the new *Making Tax Digital for Income Tax* rules kick in. Here is what you need to know before the deadline:
If your gross income (your total turnover BEFORE expenses, not your profit) was over £50,000 last year, your old way of doing taxes is now illegal.
❌ **What's gone:** Handing your accountant a carrier bag full of screwfix receipts once a year.
❌ **What's gone:** Filing a single, annual Self-Assessment tax return.
✅ **What's new:** You now MUST keep digital records using approved software (like Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent).
✅ **What's new:** You have to send HMRC **four quarterly updates** every single year, plus a final end-of-year declaration.
Yes, that means reporting your income and expenses to the taxman every 3 months.
HMRC says this will "prevent errors" and "modernise the system." But for a lot of sparks, plumbers, and chippies who spend 10 hours a day on site, it just sounds like four times the paperwork.
The good news? The penalty points system is lenient for the first 12 months, but you still need to be signed up and keeping digital records by April 6th to avoid future fines.
