🛠️ YOU’VE BEEN DOING IT WRONG: 5 Drilling Myths That Are Ruining Your DIY 🛠️
Think you know how to pick up a drill and get a perfect hole every time? Think again. We see the same mistakes over and over on UK sites and in home renos. It's not just about 'pressing harder'—in fact, that's usually the first thing people get wrong.
Let’s bust 5 common myths that are costing you money in broken bits and shoddy finishes. 👇
Myth 1: "Hammer mode makes everything faster."
The Truth: Using hammer action on wood or metal is a one-way ticket to a ruined workpiece and a blunt bit. Hammer mode is strictly for masonry. If you're drilling into timber, keep it on the 'Drill' (rotary) setting for a clean cut.
Myth 2: "One drill bit does it all."
The Truth: We’ve all seen someone try to drill into a brick wall with a wood bit. It just glows red and melts. You need the right tool for the substrate. Multi-material bits are great for light DIY, but for serious masonry, you want tungsten carbide tips.

Myth 3: "Faster speed equals a quicker hole."
The Truth: Speed generates heat, and heat kills drill bits. For large holes in wood (using flat bits) or any hole in metal, slow and steady wins. If your bit is smoking, you’re going too fast.
Myth 4: "Depth stops are for beginners."
The Truth: Unless you want to accidentally drill through to the other side of a kitchen cabinet or hit a pipe in a shallow wall, use the depth stop rod. No rod? Wrap a bit of electrical tape around the bit at the required depth. It’s a literal life-saver.
Myth 5: "Push as hard as you can."
The Truth: Let the tool do the work! Excessive pressure snaps small bits and causes the motor to overheat. If a masonry bit isn't 'biting', it's likely blunt or you’ve hit a flint—pressing harder won't help.
