SmartWaste data shows overall UK construction site waste is rising. What material inefficiency means for trades buying timber and building supplies.
For two decades, the UK construction industry has prioritised diverting waste away from landfill sites. According to a new analysis by BRE's sustainability data platform, SmartWaste, which examined nearly 4,800 UK projects, that specific objective has largely been achieved. However, the total volume of waste generated across sites is continuing to climb, highlighting a persistent issue with material inefficiency during build processes.
While recycling and recovery routes prevent raw tonnage from ending up in the ground, generating excess waste in the first place remains a massive financial and operational burden. Skips, sorting services, and haulage charges have all surged in cost. High material waste indicates that raw supplies—including timber, plasterboard, blockwork, and insulation—are being over-ordered, damaged in transit, or incorrectly processed on-site before installation.
For sole traders, joiners, and general builders buying directly from trade counters like Screwfix, Toolstation, or local timber merchants, material waste directly eats into job margins. As merchants pass on site-waste management costs and manufacturers face pressure to curb resource consumption, raw material prices stay artificially inflated. Tradespeople should focus on tighter off-take estimates, protecting delivered board and timber from weather damage on-site, and utilizing off-cut management rather than relying on heavy skip use. Paying extra for pre-cut components or engineered timber can often cost less overall than buying bulk raw materials that end up in a recycled waste skip.
Contractors should audit their standard scrap rates and review on-site storage. Simple changes—such as keeping sheet materials off wet ground and securing plasterboard early—drastically reduce damaged disposal, cutting both procurement expenses and waste processing fees.
