Peugeot research shows UK van drivers spend £780 a year on average in Clean Air Zone charges, rising to almost £1,200 for tradespeople in London.
New research published by Peugeot reveals that UK van drivers spend an average of £780 per year on charges and penalty notices associated with Low Emission and Clean Air Zones (CAZs). The financial pressure is highest in Greater London, where sole traders and fleet operators pay an average of £99 per month—totaling nearly £1,200 annually—to run non-compliant vehicles within enforcement areas.
The cost burden stems from the rapid expansion of clean air initiatives across major UK cities, including London's ULEZ, Birmingham, Bristol, and Sheffield. Older diesel vans that do not meet Euro 6 emissions standards face daily access fees, which quickly accumulate for tradespeople traveling between different job sites, trade counters, and building merchants.
These figures directly alter the total cost of ownership calculations when buying or leasing a trade vehicle. Tradespeople operating older Euro 5 diesel vans must factor up to £100 per month in zone charges into their overheads, effectively bridging the price gap between keeping a older vehicle and upgrading to a Euro 6 diesel or electric van. When sourcing a used van from local dealers or auction sites, buyers must explicitly check Euro 6 compliance to avoid unexpected daily fees. Furthermore, drivers purchasing heavy tools, stock, or building materials should evaluate whether ordering delivery directly from merchants like Travis Perkins or Wickes is cheaper than driving a non-compliant van into urban zones.
As municipal authorities continue to evaluate air quality standards, non-compliant light commercial vehicles will face increasing operational penalties. For self-employed joiners, plumbers, and electricians, upgrading to compliant transport is fast becoming a necessary business expense rather than an optional upgrade.
